Moscow - Russia and the United States (US) are at war in the Pacific waters. This happened because the United States (US) submarine was seen in Russian territory on Saturday, February 12, 2022.
The Russian Defense Ministry claims the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate must chase and repel US submarines carrying out military activities in Pacific waters. this incident occurred in its waters off the Kuril Islands, close to Japan.
Moscow says Washington's side violates international law and poses a security threat at a time when relations are currently heating up between the two countries over the Ukraine issue. Moscow and Washington could launch into the Ukraine issue at any time now. The Russian Defense Ministry claims the US submarine ignored orders from its warships to surface.
Quoted from Defense Security Asia, the US submarine is believed to be of the nuclear-powered Virginia-class type which weighs between 8,700 tonnes and 12,000 tonnes and carries Tomahawk cruise missiles and torpedoes.
The frigate's crew, the Marshal Shaposhnikov, had to use some undisclosed means to force the US submarine to leave Russian waters. "The US submarine has left Russian waters at maximum speed," the Russian Defense Minister said.
The Russian military detected the presence of a US submarine yesterday near the Kuril Islands believed to be spying on naval exercises conducted by naval assets of Russia's Pacific Fleet in nearby waters.
The Russian government has acted to summon the US defense attache in Moscow to convey Moscow's protest over the country's submarine intrusion incident in the waters of the Kuril Islands. In retaliation, Washington denied that the submarine was carrying out any military activity in Russian waters, as Moscow has alleged.
"There is no truth to Russia's allegations about our activities in its waters," US military spokesman Captain Kyle Raines said in a statement quoted by the international news agency Reuters.
The frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov is a Udaloy class warship currently in service under the command of the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet. The Marshal Shaposhnikov is a multi-purpose warship capable of dealing with threats on land, water and underwater.
The 163-meter-long 6,200-ton ship entered the country's naval service in 1985 and in 1997 underwent upgrade work involving its weapons systems and sensors. The Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate is equipped with 16 launch cells for Calibr cruise missiles, eight Uran anti-ship missiles and "Kinzhal" anti-air defense missiles as well as various types of cannons.
The frigate is said to be equipped with a hypersonic missile, the Tsirkon. With a crew of 300, the warship Marshal Shaposhnikov can operate 10,500 nautical miles at a speed of 14 knots.
