US Troops Arrest Senior ISIS Commander, Expert in Bomb Makers in Syria |
International Military - US troops have arrested a senior commander of the Islamic State terrorist group or ISIS in Syria. The Pentagon said the captured terrorist group leader was a bomb-making expert. The arrests took place on Thursday (16/6/2022) in the early hours of Syria in a US-led international coalition military operation.
The mission was carefully planned to minimize the risk of additional damage, particularly potential harm to civilians, the US-led coalition said, referring to the Operation Inherent Resolve mission, in a statement. No civilians were injured during the operation or damage to coalition aircraft or assets.
The identity of the captured senior ISIS commander has not been released by the Pentagon. ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi blew himself up with a bomb vest in northwest Syria earlier this year during a US Special Operations counterterrorism mission.
Previously, ISIS' first former leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, committed suicide in northern Syria in October 2019 when US Special Operations forces entered the compound where he was hiding. "Coalition forces will continue to hunt down Daesh (ISIS) remnants wherever they are hiding to ensure their eternal defeat," the coalition statement continued.
