Washington - The United States says it has carried out air strikes in eastern Syria, targeting infrastructure facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
In a statement Wednesday, the US military's Central Command said the attack in Syria's Deir Az Zor was ordered by President Joe Biden. There was no immediate comment from the Syrian government.
Quoted from Reuters, Central Command said the attack took proportionate and deliberate action intended to limit the risk of escalation and minimize the risk of casualties. It did not identify the target or offer casualty figures from the attack.
The attack was in response to the August 15 attack targeting US troops. The attack saw drones allegedly launched by Iran-backed militias target the al-Tanf Garrison used by US forces. Central Command described the attack as "no casualties and no damage" at the time.
Deir Az Zor is a strategic province that borders Iraq and has oil fields. Iranian-backed militia groups and Syrian forces control the area and have been frequently targeted by Israeli warplanes in previous attacks. US troops entered Syria in 2015, supporting allied forces in their fight against the ISIL (ISIS) group.
