India Plans To Develop Domestic Version Of AESA Radar For Su-30MKI Fighters |
New Delhi - The Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) will develop a national active electronic scanning radar (AESA) for the Indian Air Force (IAF) Su-30MKI aircraft. The state-owned DRDO Electronics and Radar Development Establishment will develop an upgraded version of the Uttam radar for the Russian jet in the next three to four years.
As reported by the Delhi Defense Review, flight tests of this radar will begin in the next two years. The DRDO and IAF will jointly finance the project with the largest portion of financing by the IAF.
The IAF will lend several Su-30 MKIs for development, integration, flight testing and certification of the new radar. The new version of this radar will have additional sender and receiver modules and a larger power supply for better tracking and search range.
The aircraft will also be equipped with more robust domestic flight controls, which will allow the integration of hypersonic air-to-surface cruise missiles. In addition to the Su-30MKI aircraft, this AESA radar will also be integrated into Indian domestically made fighter aircraft such as Tejas and AMCA.
