US Army Selects UK BAE Systems 'Beowulf' for Combat Vehicles |
International Military - The US Army has selected a cold weather all-terrain vehicle made by BAE Systems, UK. The decision has eliminated another competitor, Oshkosh Defense-ST Engineering.
For this victory BAE Systems in collaboration with a company from Sweden was awarded a USD 278 million contract for the supply of production units, spare parts, and contractor logistics support.
The vehicle that will be made by BAE Systems is called the Beowulf. This unarmoured vehicle uses chain wheels and has the capacity to carry people in one of its two compartments.
The Beowulf can traverse conditions of snow, ice, rock, sand, mud and swamp, and can operate in steep mountain environments, BAE Systems said in a statement. This vehicle also has amphibious capabilities to swim in flooded areas or coastal waters.
The US Army became Beowulf's first customer based on the BvS10 armored variant base already in use by five countries. The plan, Beowulf will maximize its use in the Arctic region.
