US Trials MFEW-AL Electronic Jammer Pod For Mounting On Drones |
International Military - Improving the ability of drones to be lowered into the battlefield, is one of the efforts made by the US Army. A jammer pod for electronic warfare (EW) was created and now the US Army already has a pod named Multi-Function Electronic Warfare-Air Large (MFEW-AL).
The MFEW-AL is on display this week in Aberdeen, Maryland, Defense News reports. The US Army is rebuilding its EW arsenal after decades of focusing on counterterrorism. The targeting of communications and other networks seen daily in the war in Ukraine adds a level of urgency to the US Army having this equipment.
The EW is said to be a battle device for control of the electromagnetic spectrum, which the military uses for situational awareness, communications, and weapons guidance. These contests are growing in importance as more and more advanced technology is deployed on the battlefield and troops try to minimize signatures to avoid detection.
The MFEW-AL standalone pod was built by Lockheed Martin and will be attached to the US Army's General Atomics MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone. Other platforms are now being explored.
The Air Force has also expressed interest in using it on the A-10 attack aircraft. In addition, this pod can also be integrated for the High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System, which is a jet equipped with equipment for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
