Lockheed Martin develops Speed Racer, Low-cost Loyal Wingman for F-35 |
International Military - Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works advanced projects division is developing the "loyal wingman" Speed Racer to accompany the F-35 stealth fighter. Speed Racer will be equipped with artificial intelligence capable of working autonomously and working collaboratively with manned aircraft.
Currently Skunk Works will soon begin initial flight testing of the Speed Racer. This test is part of Project Carrera. More than 100 million has been invested in this project. One-fifth of this amount has been spent on combining the operation of manned and unmanned systems. USD 42 million is allocated for open architecture and artificial intelligence development.
The Speed Racer is a low-cost, experimental “road finder” drone for the development of new digital engineering and advanced manufacturing techniques. The drone has a modular architecture that allows it to be relatively easily reconfigured for different mission sets. Lockheed Martin claims, Speed Racer as a companion drone for low-cost manned aircraft.
