Russian Sukhoi Su-30 Crashed In Settlement Area in Siberia |
International Military - A Su-30 fighter jet crashes in a residential area in the Siberian city of Irkutsk. The plane crashed during a test flight, Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Sunday (10/23/2022). "An Su-30 plane crashed during a test flight. It crashed within the city limits, in the area of a single family home," the ministry said in a statement, as quoted by TASS.
The fighter plane crashed in a single-family wooden house, setting off a fire. First responders are working at the scene. The two pilots who were crewing the plane were reported dead. "Two pilots died.
There were no casualties among the civilians. The fire on the ground has been put out," the ministry said. In a post on Telegram, Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev said the plane hit a two-story house in the city. He published a video showing firefighters climbing the rubble and directing jets of water. to the still-smoldering rubble.
Video of Sunday's incident, shared on social media, shows the plane dive almost vertically before hitting a fireball, sending jets of black smoke into the sky. Kobzev said 150 nearby homes were without electricity and work was being carried out to restore power.
This is the second incident involving a Russian Sukhoi. Last Monday, a Sukhoi Su-34 crashed into an apartment block in the southern city of Yeysk, near Ukraine, and at least 15 people died. Authorities said an initial investigation into the disaster - in which the pilot was ejected - indicated a technical malfunction of the plane. Russia's state Investigative Committee said it had launched a criminal investigation into violations of air safety rules.
