Skybot F-850, Russian Humanoid Robot Designed for Space Missions |
Moscow - Russian-made humanoid robot, Skybot F-850, specially designed to carry out missions to outer space. The humanoid robot Skybot F-850 measuring 180 cm tall is tasked with assisting the crew or astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). The humanoid robot Skybot F-850, is one of the newest versions of Russia's FEDOR robot, which has been developed as a multi-purpose stand for humans. The Skybot F-850 helps in various rescue work to missions to outer space.
The humanoid robot Skybot F-850 will for the first time replace commanders on Soyuz to monitor and report conditions during unmanned flights. Including the force conditions on the spacecraft as it enters orbit and the start of zero gravity.
Director of Advanced Programs and Science at Roscosmos, Alexander Bloshenko, said the first Skybot F-850 will serve as a social companion and interactive reference guide for Russia on the ISS. The robot is equipped with operational documentation for the space station. The multifunctional robot can answer questions and hold conversations, even tell jokes, although only in Russian at the moment.

"This is just the beginning. Future generations of such robots will complete tasks that have the potential to pose particular risks to humans," Bloshenko told Space.com. Bloshenko said the version of the Skybot F-850 that will fly to the ISS is made of tough materials designed to withstand vibrations during launch and the demands of operations in space. Special movement algorithms have also been installed and Skybot's actions will be intentionally restricted to ensure that it does not cause unintentional damage to the ISS.
"Artificial intelligence allows the Skybot F-850 to move and act independently, or it can work in avatar mode, under the control of an operator wearing a full-body control suit," said Bloshenko. The robot's humanoid design, in particular its advanced hands, allows it to work with standard "human" tools. Video shows him running, turning valves, unlocking doors, and operating a fire extinguisher, electric drill, and gas torch for welding.
