Aero Vodochody Successfully Trials the First Flight of the Prototype L-159 T2X Aircraft |
International Military - In line with the support and maintenance of the existing L-159 aircraft, Aero Vodocody continues to improve its capabilities. The ultimate goal is to provide an aircraft that will meet the requirements of the training needs of 5th generation fighter pilots.
Last week, after four years of intensive work, the L-159 T2X prototype (demonstrator) took off from the airport in Vodochody. This is the aircraft where engineers test new avionics systems and key design elements. Aero Vodochody continues to improve the key elements of the aircraft known as the Honey Badger such as its range, toughness and combat capability.
“We have developed a new wing and integral tank which increases range, especially for the two-seat configuration. This will also allow us to increase the number of usable weapon hangers in the wings. We also plan to integrate completely redesigned avionics and precision weapons technology against ground targets. With this upgrade, we want to ensure long-term and efficient use of the aircraft for our customers,” said Milos Trnbransky, chief designer of the L-39, L-59 and L-159 aircraft at Aero.
Among the advantages of the L-159 over competitors in its class are low operating costs and ease of maintenance in daily operation. As such, the aircraft is an ideal platform for advanced pilot training and fighter jets for the 4th generation as well as for the 5th generation.
The L-159 series jet trainer aircraft produced by Aero Vodochody is currently in service with the Czech Air Force and Iraqi Air Force. Then European Draken, has also signed a cooperation agreement with Aero Vodochody earlier this year in Farnborough.
Draken Europe will use the L-159 as an aggressor aircraft in the training of fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force (RAF), . In total, Aero Vodochody has produced 86 L-159s in various configurations to date.
