International Military - Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) from India and Airbus Defense and Space from Europe set up a consortium to manufacture C295 military transport aircraft in India to meet the needs of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The laying of the first stone for the construction of a manufacturing factory facility for this aircraft in Vadodara, Gujarat, India was carried out by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 30 October.

The ceremony was also attended by Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Modi said India was moving forward with the slogan “Make in India, Make for the World”.

India had earlier purchased 56 C-295s from Airbus Defense and Space worth USD 2.65 billion (Rs 21,935cr). Of these, Airbus will send 16 aircraft in flying condition to India. Meanwhile, another 40 units will be produced at the Vadodara facility by a consortium, including TASL and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

It was explained that the consortium would handle the manufacture of 13,400 parts, 4,600 sub-assemblies, and seven main component assemblies of the C-295 transport aircraft. Meanwhile, Airbus will provide engines, landing gear, avionics and electronic warfare (EW) equipment.

Airbus Defense and Space will deliver 16 C-295s from September 2023 to August 2025. Deliveries of the consortium's C-295 aircraft in India will start in September 2026. All aircraft will be equipped with electronic components by Bharat Electronics and EW devices by Bharat Dynamics. More than 125 Indian micro, small and medium enterprise suppliers will be involved in the project.

Once 56 aircraft have been successfully produced and delivered to the IAF, the company will be permitted to sell or export aircraft manufactured in India to civilian operators and to countries permitted by the Indian government.
