US Agrees to Sell Weapons Worth $428 Million to Taiwan, |
Beijing - China firmly opposes the decision of the United States (US) to agree to sell weapons to Taiwan. China also warned that it would take firm action. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press briefing in Beijing in response to the US State Department's approval of a potential $428 million sale of aircraft parts to Taiwan.
Mao said US arms sales to Taiwanese territory were a blatant violation of the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués, especially the August 17 Communiqué. Mao said China regretted and resolutely rejected the decision and would act decisively to defend its sovereignty and security interests. "China urges the US to abide by the principle of one China and the three China-US joint communiqués and earnestly act on the commitment made by the US leadership not to support Taiwan independence," he said.
Mao said the US must stop arms sales and military contacts to Taiwan, stop creating factors that could cause tension in the Taiwan Strait, and stop using Taiwan to contain China. "Don't go further down the wrong and dangerous path," concluded Mao.
