US Coast Guard Detects Russian Reconnaissance Ship Off Hawaii |
Hawaii - A Russian spy ship has been detected on patrol off the coast of Hawaii. However, so far it remains in international waters, said the Pentagon, Thursday (19/1/2023).
While the appearance of Russian reconnaissance ships along the United States coastline is not uncommon, this one has attracted more attention due to the increasing tensions between the US and Russia over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. In addition, there are still veiled threats to use nuclear weapons.
As AP reports, the Vishnya-class Kareliya surveillance vessel has been monitored by the US Coast Guard sailing near Hawaii for the past few weeks. "I can't speak for why Russia is sailing the ship now, this is a crucial time," said Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh.
According to him, the US Coast Guard is still monitoring ships that have been operating in international waters. "We have not seen any unsafe or unprofessional behavior and we hope that Russia will operate in the area in accordance with international law," Singh said.
In a video posted to Twitter by the US Coast Guard, the ship appears to be being towed by another vessel or in supply mode. "The US Indo-Pacific Command is monitoring Russian vessels operating in international waters in the Western Pacific," the Pentagon said in a statement. "As Russia operates in the area, it is expected to do so in accordance with international law," the statement continued.
