After Germany, US Will Also Send 31 Units M1 Abrams Tanks to Ukraine |
Washington - After Germany said it would send 14 Leopard 2 A6 main battle tanks, the US Department of Defense announced it would deliver 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of its latest Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
Germany and the US both said they would conduct training on Ukrainian crews. Likewise for logistical support, ammunition, and tank maintenance.
Germany said 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks would be drawn from Bundeswehr stockpiles and would form a company. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the first tanks would arrive in Ukraine in three months. Other European partners will also hand over Leopard 2 tanks. In this way, two tank battalions with Leopard 2 tanks will soon be assembled for Ukraine.
The Pentagon says the USAI package is worth 400 million USD. The aid includes 31 Abrams tanks with 120 mm rounds and other ammunition. The US will also deliver eight M88 tactical vehicles.
In total, the United States has now provided more than $27.8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the start of the Biden administration.
