Comparison of the Rocket System Russian Tornado-s VS US HIMARS |
International Military - It was recently discovered that Russia has launched a Tornado-s multi-target rocket system at the IDEX 2023 International arms exhibition in Abu Dhabi. The rocket system is said to be similar to the US-made HIMARS.
Himars is an American-made rocket system that has been installed in the combat area of Ukraine. This weapon was used as the main weapon to liberate the Kherson region from the Russians.
With this in mind, Russia deployed and increased the production of its own MLRS, namely, Tornado-s to deal with US-made Himars.
Russian military expert Yuri Krotov said in an interview on November 23, 2022 that “if we talk about HIMARS, then our Tornado-S system with a firing range of 120 kilometers and the ability to aim each missile individually has been at the forefront. They are much stronger than HIMARS.”
The Russian Tornado-S is indeed similar to the American HIMARS, namely a multiple launch rocket system that is used to attack targets at very long distances. But even though they are considered to have similarities, it turns out that the two of them have different abilities. Especially related to the shooting range it has.
The Russian ground forces' 9A54 Tornado-S system can fire twelve 300mm GLONASS guided rockets at a range of 120 kilometers with the same accuracy as HIMARS.
Additionally, the Tornado-S has a reduced launch readiness time of just three minutes, making it faster and more effective as well as having a new and improved payload.
This is in comparison to the US HIMARS which is only capable of firing six 227mm rockets and a shooting distance of only 80 kilometers and has an accuracy of only five to ten meters.
Russian troops have used the Tornado-S system during the war in Donbass and also when they invaded Ukraine in 2022. So this system has provided the same advantages that HIMARS gave Ukraine.
