Russian Submarine Fires Kalibr Cruise Missile from Sea of Japan |
International Military - A Russian naval submarine operating in the Sea of Japan has fired Kalibr cruise missiles in a combat exercise. The missile successfully hit ground targets more than 1,000 kilometers away.
The Russian Ministry of Defense on Friday (3/3/2023) announced the cruise missile maneuver. The missiles are the same type used by Mosko in its war on Ukraine. The ministry, quoted by Reuters, published a video showing the missile emerging from under seawater and then hitting a target at a training area in Russia's eastern Khabarovsk region.
Russia, which is embroiled in a decades-long territorial dispute with Japan over a chain of Pacific islands, said a number of its Pacific Fleet's ships, jets and drones were also involved in the exercise, securing the perimeter.
Russia has been using Kalibr missiles to attack various targets in Ukraine, including power plants. The weapon is frequently launched from surface ships and submarines in the Black Sea.
