Airbus Demonstrates the Autonomous Ability to Control the Traget DT-25 Drone From the A310 MRTT Aircraft |
International Military - Airbus UpNext successfully demonstrated the autonomous guidance and control capabilities of the Traget DT-25 Drone from the A310 Multi-Role Tanker Transporter (MRTT) aircraft. Airbus said the achievement marked the first step in autonomous formation flight and air-to-air refueling capabilities.
This demonstration also marks an important milestone for future air operations representing manned and unmanned teams. To achieve this, Airbus integrates Airbus Auto'Mate technology through the A310 MRTT aircraft and a number of DT-25 target drones that function as receiver aircraft.
The A310 tanker took off from Getafe in Spain on March 21, while the target drone flew from the Arenosillo Test Center in Huelva, Spain. After taking off from their respective bases, the A310 MRTT takes control of the drone from the ground station. This transition allows the MRTT to independently guide the DT-25 aircraft to the desired in-flight refueling position.
The test flight was carried out over the waters of the Gulf of Cadiz and lasted about six hours. The next test for the Auto'Mate technology is scheduled for later this year. Testing will focus on using AI-based navigation sensors and improving algorithms for autonomous formation flight.
