Approaching the Nato Region, Romanian F-16 Fighter Jets Intercept 2 Russian Su-27 Fighter |
International Military - A Romanian F-16 fighter jet intercepted two Russian Su-27 fighter jets over international waters in the Baltic for which NATO is responsible.
The incident occurred on Friday (7/4/2023), six days into the assignment of a Romanian fighter jet crew as part of an enhanced air patrol mission over the Baltic. Romanian F-16 pilots received notification from the NATO Air Operations Center in Uedem, Germany, of the presence of two unidentified aircraft approaching the territory of NATO countries.
After the interception, the two fighter jets were identified as Russian Su-27s. Romanian F-16 fighter jets then escorted the two Moscow Su-27 fighters away from the NATO area of responsibility.
In just one week in late March, fighter jets from the NATO mission in the Baltic took off six times to escort Russian aircraft that violated flight rules in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
"On April 7, 2023, just six days after the start of NATO's enhanced air surveillance mission in the Baltic states, the NATO Air Operations Center in Uedem, Germany, sounded the alarm with 2 F-16 fighter jets from the Air Force's Carpathian Vipers Detachment," the government press service said. Romania, reported Saturday (8/4/2023) "They were safely escorted out of the alliance's area of responsibility," the service continued.
