The Last PA474 Lancaster Bomber Returns To Air Over Europe |
International Military - Lancaster PA474 bomber will take part in the Royal Air Force's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), on 4 May 2023. The last of the bombers will fly over Belgium and the Netherlands.
Quoted from Forces Net, the plane will fly from Knokke in Belgium, and pass through the Netherlands. then landed in Bergen. Flights were managed by personnel, at RAF Coningsby, home of the RAF BBMF and Typhoon Display Team. "The BBMF's mission is to maintain a number of historic wartime aircraft in airworthy condition, in memory of those who died," the page read.
The flight will also commemorate the role of the Lancaster bombers in the liberation of Europe, and as a commemoration of Operation Manna, when Lancaster was used to deliver aid to the Netherlands. "The Lancaster is one of the most iconic and well-known aircraft of the Second World War, due to its role in the daring Dambusters mission 80 years ago," he continued.
Nineteen Lancaster bombers from 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton, in Lincolnshire, on the night of 16–17 May 1943, to destroy dams in the industrial heart of Nazi Germany and cut off vital supplies in the Ruhr Valley. "To commemorate 80 years of the Dambusters, the Lancaster RAF BBMF Lancaster will also be flying around Lincolnshire on 16 May," he concluded.
