US F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes and Burns in South Korea During Training |
Seoul - A United States (US) F-16 fighter jet crashed during training on Saturday (6/5/2023) near the main American military base in South Korea (South Korea). "The jet, which was assigned to the 8th Fighter Wing, crashed in an agricultural area near Osan Air Base at approximately 9:45 a.m. local time," the US Air Force in South Korea said in a statement, as quoted by CNN.
According to the statement, the pilot ejected before the fighter jet crashed to the ground and burst into flames. The pilot was reported safe and transported to a nearby medical facility. No civilians were injured in the incident.
The governor of South Korea's Gyeonggi Province, Kim Dong-yeon, wrote on Twitter that the local fire department was dispatched to put out the blaze on a US F-16 fighter jet.
According to the US Air Force, the F-16 pilot participated in a routine training flight, adding that an investigation into the incident was underway. Osan Air Base is the closest US Air Force base to North Korea, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) from its border.
